The SDC-PE15N module is an 802.11n PCI Express Mini Card with all key Summit hardware and software capabilities. This dual-band radio module operates in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands supporting IEEE 802.11n as well as 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. As a result, the SDC-PE15N module is ideal for integration into a vehicle-mounted mobile computer or any other business-critical mobile device that runs Windows XP.

    Note: Summit recommends that the mounting holes be connected to the mating circuit board with conductive screws that connect to the ground plane of the main circuit board. This is helpful in reducing radiating emissions below 1GHz that are a common occurrence in high-speed electrical circuits.

The SDC-PE15N is certified for compliance to various ETSI, FCC, MIC (formerly TELEC), and Industry Canada standards as well as Wi-Fi Alliance and Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) specifications. The grants, approvals, and formal test reports associated with these certifications may be leveraged by Summit customers to achieve their required device certifications. The degree to which customers can leverage these Summit items is dependent upon the regulatory agency, industry body, and the type of end device.

CE & ETSI

The SDC-PE15N has been tested for compliance to various CE and ETSI standards and specifications. This testing was conducted with the following antennas:

Note: There were no changes made between the Broadcom and the Summit versions of this product that impact the EN 301 489 and the EN 301 893 standards. Therefore, Broadcom reports for these standards are linked above. Summit customers may leverage these documents accordingly.

These formal test reports may be leveraged by mobile and portable device vendors as part of their self declaration to obtain the CE mark required by members of the European Union. ETSI/CE rules differ from those of the FCC and IC in that there is no provision for a modular approval. All approvals and certifications must exist at the device level rather than the module (radio) level.

Summit has obtained a Frequency Authority Certificate for the SDC-PE15N in compliance with Annex IV procedures in article 10.5 of R&TTE directive 99/5/EC. Like all Summit devices, the SDC-PE15N is fully compliant with European Union Directive 2003/95/EC or Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) as per our Declaration of Compliance.

FCC

Summit has received two FCC grants for the SDC-PE15N (FCC identifier TWG-SDCPE15N). These grants were secured with the following antennas:

The Part 15.247 Digital Transmission System grant and associated test report relates to operation in the following frequency bands:

  • 2.412 to 2.462 GHz (the ISM band)
  • 5.745 to 5.805 GHz (the UNII-3 band)

The Part 15.205 Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure grant and associated test report relates to operation in the following frequency bands:

  • 5.180 to 5.240 GHz (the UNII-1 band)
  • 5.280 to 5.320 GHz (the UNII-2 band)
  • 5.500 to 5.700 GHz (the UNII-2 Extended band)

The above grants are Limited Modular Approvals (LMAs). Specific limitations are indicated on each grant.

Mobile Devices

FCC rules allow vendors to use these grants for their mobile devices without additional testing or certification only if the following conditions are met:

  • The radio must be set for no more than the same transmit power as was used for the grant.
  • The antennas used with these devices must be of like type (i.e., dipole or monopole).
  • The antennas used with these devices must be of equal or lesser gain.
  • Mobile device vendors must add all necessary FCC statements to their user's manual. These statements may be found in the Hardware Integration Guide accessed from the product specifications page for this product.

Portable Devices

Because of their operation within close proximity of the human body, portable devices must undergo an additional level of testing that is not required of mobile devices. This testing is referred to as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing which measures the amount of energy from the device that is absorbed by the human body. Because SAR is very device-specific, FCC rules do not allow for an LMA for use with portable devices. As such, portable device vendors must secure an FCC grant for their devices rather than leverage an existing grant at the module (radio) level.

Portable device vendors may leverage all test reports associated with the TWG-SDCPE15N grants as referenced above. Summit's TWG-SDCPE15N grants were obtained through a TCB, Elliott Labs. Device vendors may find it most efficient to work with Elliott for their portable device certifications. Elliott does not provide SAR testing but can recommend applicable test labs.

Industry Canada

The SDC-PE15N is certified to Industry Canada (IC) RSS-210 standard certification. The IC 6616A-SDCPE15N certification is based on the testing performed for the FCC certification, using the same antennas and transmit power and covering the same frequency bands. Test reports and data sheets relevant to this certification may be found in the FCC section above.

Device vendors may leverage these certifications and the associated test report when applying for MIC certifications at the device level rather than the module (radio) level.

Wi-Fi Alliance

Summit has submitted the SDC-PE15N to an authorized Wi-Fi Alliance test lab and as a result has received an Embedded Client Certification (Interoperability Certificate ID WFA8343) to the following standards: 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, WPA (both personal and enterprise) and WPA2/802.11i (both personal and enterprise). For those host devices which include the SDC-PE15N, the vendor may assert that their device incorporates a Wi-Fi Certified Embedded Client. The vendor need not be a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance to make this assertion but may not use the "Wi-Fi Certified" logo in conjunction with their device.

Device vendors who are members of the Wi-Fi Alliance may also choose to secure a Wi-Fi Alliance certification for their specific device. In this case, the vendor may not leverage the test data or certification for the Summit device. The vendor can, however, use the SDC-PE15N test plan as a template, modifying it as necessary for the capabilities of their particular device. By leveraging Summit's "pre-approved" software and test plan, the vendor has a greater assurance that their actual testing will result in an end device certification. Summit will provide consultative services to those vendors who choose to pursue a Wi-Fi Alliance certification for their Summit-equipped devices.

Cisco Compatible Extensions

Summit is a member of the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) program and has a direct license from Cisco for intellectual property relating to the various versions of the CCX specifications. Summit has submitted the SDC-PE15N to an authorized CCX test lab and has been found to be fully compliant with version 4 of the CCX specifications for application specific devices (ASDs). For those host devices which include the SDC-PE15N, the vendor may assert that their device incorporates a Cisco Compatible radio module.

Device vendors who are members of the CCX program may also choose to secure CCX compliance for their end device. When incorporating the SDC-PE15N into their product with the above software version, the vendor need not be a direct licensee for Cisco intellectual property. Rather, in this case the device vendor need only submit their SDC-PE15N enabled device for CCX compliance testing to the version 4 test plan for ASDs. By leveraging Summit's "pre-approved" software and by testing to the same plan, the vendor has a greater assurance that their actual testing will result in end device compliance. Summit will provide consultative services to those vendors who choose to pursue CCX compliance for their Summit-equipped devices.
